Product Overview
Differences Between Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Sintered Filter Cartridges:
1. Surface Characteristics and Wettability
Hydrophilic Filter Cartridges: The surface is easily wetted by water (contact angle ≤ 90°), allowing liquid solutions to quickly penetrate, suitable for filtering aqueous solutions.
Hydrophobic Filter Cartridges: The surface is not easily wetted by water (contact angle > 90°) but can be wetted by organic solvents like alcohol. Pre-wetting is required before filtering aqueous solutions.
2. Application Areas
Hydrophilic: Mainly used for liquid filtration, such as in pharmaceuticals, food, and water treatment, where efficient filtration of aqueous solutions is needed.
Hydrophobic: Commonly used for gas filtration or organic solvent filtration, such as air purification and industrial dust removal.
3. Material and Processing Performance
Both types are made from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) and possess excellent chemical stability, resistance to organic solvents, and high mechanical strength.Hydrophilic filters may undergo special surface treatment to enhance hydrophilicity, while hydrophobic filters retain their natural hydrophobic properties.
4. Filtration Principle
Hydrophilic filters rely on capillary action to directly filter liquids efficiently.
Hydrophobic filters require pre-wetting (e.g., with ethanol) to alter surface tension, allowing aqueous solutions to pass through.
5. Regeneration and Maintenance
Hydrophilic filters can be regenerated and restored through backwashing or acid treatment.
Hydrophobic filters, due to strong hydrophobicity, are easier to clean with water to remove surface dust, thereby extending their service life.
Summary:
Selection should be based on the filtration medium (aqueous or organic). Hydrophilic filters are suitable for aqueous solutions, while hydrophobic filters are suitable for gases or organic solvents. The two types are similar in material and processing performance, but their surface treatment and application scenarios differ significantly.
